“Give Me Doctor Jazz!”: The Genesis of an American Art Form
June 13 @ 3:00 pm
Our series of piano recital/lectures feature Dr. Peter Muir, a versatile international pianist, conductor, educator and musicologist. He possesses an impressive broad repertoire embracing jazz, blues, ragtime and classical. The New York Times describes his talent as “potent” and Newsday praised his terrific performances.
This recital/lecture shows how jazz developed in the first decades of the 20th century by the rhythmical freeing-up of ragtime. This evolution mirrored wider changes in American society as it cast off the repressive shackles of Victorianism and embraced the liberal values of modernism, and climaxed in the euphoric “Jazz Age” of the 1920s.
An educational and musical feast you won’t want to miss! It offers original insights into, and a deepened understanding, of the nature of jazz, its relationship to society and its early evolution.
