A Concise History of Classical Music with Piano Demonstrations

March 29 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

This 60 minute lecture/demonstration followed by a Q & A tells the history of Western Classical Music from ancient times to the present. It discusses the formation and evolution of musical genres including opera, symphonies, and concertos (and more), plus the circumstances which led to the creation of these works. Musical demonstrations at the piano will highlight and display excerpts of many of these works, and will demonstrate the evolving styles which composers from each period first abided by, and then expanded, thus changing history, and influencing others to do the same.  You won’t want to miss this amazing musical journey presented by conductor, professor, music historian and author, Dr. Harold Rosenbaum!

Dr. Harold Rosenbaum is a retired professor from Juilliard as well as the University of Buffalo, Adelphi Univrsity and Queens College. He is the founder of the Westchester Oratorio Society, and Music Director at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Katonah.   He taught Music Appreciation and many other courses during his 45-year teaching career. He is the founder of the all-professional choir, The New York Virtuoso Singers, now in its 37th season. He has conducted 600 world premieres, has toured with choirs 29 times in Europe, and has conducted about 1900 concerts in his 55-year career. His numerous awards include the Ditson Conductor’s Award, ASCAP’s Victor Herbert Award and the American Composer’s Alliance’s Laurel Leaf Award. See www.haroldrosenbaum.com and www.nyvirtuoso.org.
