Banned Books Book Club

February 7 @ 11:45 am - 12:00 pm

The Banned Books Book Club meets the first Wednesday of every month. This month we will be reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, a classic novel that explores the oppressive environment of a mental institution. The story is narrated by Chief Bromden, a patient who pretends to be deaf and dumb to avoid confrontation. The arrival of the rebellious and charismatic Randle P. McMurphy disrupts the routine of the institution, challenging the authoritarian Nurse Ratched and inspiring other patients to reclaim their individuality. McMurphy’s confrontations with Nurse Ratched escalate into a power struggle that symbolizes the broader societal conflicts of conformity versus rebellion. Kesey’s narrative delves into the consequences of institutional control and the human spirit’s resilience in the face of oppression, leaving readers with a thought-provoking exploration of mental health, societal norms, and personal freedom.

Books are available at the circulation desk.

In this book club, we embrace the power of provocative narratives and celebrate the freedom to explore ideas that have been deemed too controversial or challenging by some. Engage in thought-provoking conversations about the novel’s themes, characters, and its impact on society. Share your insights and perspectives in a welcoming and inclusive environment. Connect with like-minded individuals who appreciate the power of literature to challenge societal norms and promote critical thinking. Embark on a literary adventure that challenges boundaries, stimulates the mind, and fosters a community of free thinkers. Let’s celebrate the freedom to read together!
