Kandinsky’s Circles

February 7 @ 12:30 pm - 2:30 pm

A fun new abstract art workshop on Kandinsky’s circles led by Pound Ridge artist Lauren Teton.

Can you paint a circle? Then come and paint Kandinsky’s Circles with us! We will use “Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles, 1913” as our reference painting. Local artist Lauren Teton will guide us as we paint and riff on this light-hearted yet brilliant and important painting using watercolor, and other mediums as Kandinsky did. You can copy Kandinsky or paint freely and make it your own. There is no “right or wrong” way to do it!

The circle,” claimed Kandinsky, “is the synthesis of the greatest oppositions. It combines the concentric and the eccentric in a single form and in equilibrium. Of the three primary forms, it points most clearly to the fourth dimension.” Vasily Kandinsky spearheaded modernist abstraction and the expressionist Abstract Style in the early 20th century and was one of the most important artists of the century. Circles were an important and recurring theme in his art. Color Study: Squares with Concentric Circles, 1913 by Vasily Kandinsky. He left his law career in his late 20s after being deeply moved by Claude Monet’s Haystack Series and use of color to express mood. He and his group of artists sought to use color to awaken a higher consciousness. He believed the circle had symbolic significance relating to the mysteries of the universe and used it as an abstract form.

Join us for this fascinating workshop and take home your own Kandinsky creation!
