From the often misunderstood snapping turtle that shared the earth with dinosaurs to the small and elusive spotted turtle rarely observed in this area, the turtles of New York are a diverse and charismatic group of animals in great need of conservation support.
Through a discussion of turtle life cycles, behavior, and conservation status participants will gain a more in-depth understanding of their turtle neighbors and how humans can better support the conservation of these unique reptiles. Though New York is home to 11 freshwater turtle species, the presentation will specifically focus on snapping turtles, painted turtles, spotted turtles, wood turtles, box turtles, musk turtles, and red-eared sliders.
Presenter Leah Cass will also discuss her on-going turtle conservation efforts and recent research. This section will focus on monitoring techniques including aquatic turtle trapping and the use of radio telemetry.
